ARTIST’S STATEMENT: The World Without Us

I create colorful, bizarre, and slightly foreboding landscape paintings using materials salvaged from my professional work making large-scale displays and murals. Working in the production industry has amplified my awareness of waste and its detrimental effects on the environment, so I like to salvage what I can such as scrap lumber and muslin, imperfect materials, leftover paint and dried paint peelings. Even my palettes and underpaintings are inspired by my collection of used stir-sticks. My work is heavily influenced by environmental issues as well as by my travels throughout the natural and manmade world. My current body is a nod to Alan Weisman's book "The World Without Us," about a hypothetical post-human world where the environment has begun to “re-wild," and my most creative work evokes fantastical post-human landscapes that are both celebratory and cautionary supplemented by small watercolors and collages.
